Ethical Credentials
As a co-operative society, Scotmid was founded with social
responsibility at the core of its values. The Society used ten Key
Social & Co-operative Performance Indicators recommended by
Co-operatives UK to assess our performance in this area. Full
details of these indicators and their use are available to view in
our Annual
Report.
Procurement
The majority of products sold in Scotmid are purchased through
the Co-operative Retail Trading Group (CRTG) and we continue to
benefit from their purchasing policies. The CRTG is committed to
the principles of sound sourcing, animal welfare, food integrity,
health and ecological sustainability.
Member Economic Involvement & Democratic Participation
Based on sampled data, Scotmid's level of member economic
involvement remains constant at 10%.
108 members attended the Society's Annual General Meeting on 26
April 2010 (101 - 2009/10) and 103 attended the Ordinary General
Meeting on 4 October 2010 (89 - 2009/10).
Staff and Member Training
In 2010/11 around 32,000 hours of formal staff training took
place within the Society, an average of 7.6 hours per employee.
E-learning amounted to 7,000 hours compared to around 4,000 hours
the year before. This method is playing an increasing part in
providing cost effective training to a geographically diverse work
force.
Members actively participated in 285 hours of training in the
last year equating to 2.6 hours of training per 'active member'
(for training purposes this has been defined as the number of
members attending the AGM).
Staff Injury, Absenteeism & Profile
Staff are encouraged to report all accidents, no matter how
minor and these are recorded to ensure that safety standards are
improved and maintained.
Absence amounts to 5.4 days per employee, a figure which falls
well below the average of 6.6 days per employee for private sector
services, a figure provided by the CIPD. The trend also falls below
the retail sector average of 6 days per employee.
Scotmid had an average of 4,211 employees in 2010/2011 compared
to 4,083 on 2009/10. Staff profile by gender was 73% female, 27%
male a figure which has remained static for 3 years.
